《我的鯨魚老爸》是一部非常感人的電影。主角是一個叫查理的人，他以前結了婚，也有一個女兒，但在女兒7、8歲時出櫃了，喜歡上一個叫艾倫的男生，並且決定跟他私奔。查理拋棄了太太和女兒，這件事讓女兒對他很生氣，很不諒解，很難過爸爸拋下了她們。他的女兒對他說:「我很感謝你教我一件事，那就是人們都是混蛋，大部分的人都太晚才知道這件事，但是你在我8歲的時候，就教我這件事了!」

在電影中，查理的愛人艾倫喜歡的一直都是男生，但艾倫的爸爸逼迫他跟教會的女生結婚，而爸爸發現艾倫是同性戀後，非常生氣，還把艾倫趕出了他們常去的那個教會。艾倫被趕出教會後，非常難過，也覺得自己一直以來的信仰崩塌了，沒有人認同他，也覺得自己竟然被所愛的教會趕走，真的是太羞愧了。一直被這些事情折磨的艾倫，後來因為受不了，就自殺了…

艾倫自殺後查理非常難過，並且罹患了暴食症。艾倫的死讓查理自暴自棄，放棄了自己，在生活中感受不到任何希望，只能用吃東西讓自己壓力小一點，但是吃了很多東西後，又會有罪惡感，因此進入了個非常不好的循環。在最後的時間，查理希望可以修補自己跟女兒的關係，也希望自己這一輩子，至少做對一件事，那就是存錢讓女兒去念大學。
我們覺得有些傷痛、難過的事，真的沒有人能幫忙，這時也許尊重他的決定才是最好的方式。
